Autumn weather sets in: Spain forecast September 19-22
Widespread rain, chilly temperatures and storms throughout Spain for the rest of the week
Weather alerts for storms and heavy rain on Friday
Autumn officially arrives in Spain on Sunday September 22 but it already feels like the summer is well and truly over. Much of the country has been experiencing overcast skies, much cooler temperatures and even storms over the last few days and, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this unsettled weather is set to continue right through the weekend.
The rains began on Wednesday September 18 due to a retrograde storm (one that travels from east to west, rather than the other way around). This front will continue to spread as the days go by, hitting large parts of the Mediterranean coast and resulting in widespread showers and storms and another noticeable dip in temperatures.
On Thursday September 19, the stormy weather will extend to most of Spain but the thunderstorms will be especially heavy in the Valencian Community, parts of Extremadura and inland municipalities.
Weather outlook on Thursday
Given this situation, Aemet has issued a yellow warning for rainfall that will accumulate between 15-30 litres in one hour in the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona (Catalonia) and in Teruel (Aragon), and in the communities of Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid and Valencia.
Daytime temperatures will fall pretty much everywhere, with the exception of the Balearic Islands.
From Friday September 20, the experts believe the storm will start moving towards northern Spain in the evening, where locally strong showers accompanied by thunderstorms are forecast.
Weather outlook on Friday
Storm activity will also continue in the southern half of the country, although it will be much lighter than on Thursday. However, regions like Andalucía and Valencia remain on alert for downpours.
The mercury should increase a little in the southeast but in general, the temperatures will hover between the low to mid-20s in most parts.
Weather outlook on Saturday
As we head into the weekend, abundant cloudiness and showers with occasional thunderstorms are forecast across the country, but the worst of the weather will hit northwestern Spain on Saturday September 21. The showers shouldn’t be as heavy further south and the weather warnings of the previous days have been lifted.
Few changes are expected temperature-wise, but it could fall by a degree or two in Andalucía.
Things will start to settle down in southern Spain on Sunday September 22, although it will remain overcast and there’s still a good chance of showers.
Weather outlook on Sunday
Daytime temperatures will also begin to recover, especially in the Mediterranean area.
