Electric Movibus buses roll into testing phase on Murcia-Molina route
A greener future for public transport is taking shape in the Region of Murcia

According to José Antonio Verdú, Director General of Mobility and Transport, the test involves two vehicles, which are part of a wider rollout of 44 new high-end buses. These new additions are part of a major push towards a more sustainable and accessible public transport system in the region.
“This is a significant commitment by the regional government to sustainable and accessible mobility, through the renewal and incorporation of low-emission vehicles and the latest technology,” Verdú explained. He highlighted the low energy consumption and reduced environmental impact of the new fleet.
The overall investment totals €28.7 million, co-financed by the European Union’s Next Generation funds and regional sources. An additional €8.9 million has also been earmarked for further technological upgrades to support the transformation of the regional bus network.
The updated vehicles will be designed with accessibility in mind, offering easier boarding for people with reduced mobility, as well as improved comfort and space for all passengers.
To support the electric fleet, 54 charging points are being installed at key locations including Alcantarilla, Cartagena, Molina de Segura and Santomera. This part of the project is valued at more than €5.1 million.
Meanwhile, the region is also pressing ahead with the digitalisation of Movibus. An extra €3.8 million will fund the introduction of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and an Advanced Operational Assistance System (AAS), aimed at making services more modern, efficient, and user-friendly.
Onboard features will include real-time bus tracking, QR codes for passenger information, digital payment options, Wi-Fi, device charging ports, video surveillance and systems for counting passengers.
“The Region of Murcia is already preparing to implement this new sustainable mobility model,” Verdú said.
He added that the next step will be the launch of a bidding process for new intercity transport concessions, expected in the coming weeks.
