Ermita de San José Totana

This is the focal point of the Barrio de San José

The ermita de San José, or church of San José, is located on an outcrop in the north-east of the town of Totana, in an area also known as the “barrio del Castillo” or “barrio de San José) and is in the Baroque style.

Today it forms part of the main urban nucleus of the town, but when it was originally built, serviced an outlying population, well away from the urban centre.

Its construction was due principally to the expansion of the population of Totana in the 17^th century, was completed in 1698 and reformed extensively in 1749 as the original construction was in danger of collapsing.

The building has a single nave with adjoining chapels on both sides. The façade is crowned with the cross of Santiago, as at the time of constructiuon, the town came under the control of the Order of Santiago.

Ermita de San José Totana

The building comes under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Cartagena.

Outside is a plaza, used during the annual local fiestas of the district, which are held at the beginning of September.
