Calasparra Fiestas and Traditions

Calasparra has a number of local fiestas and festivals throughout the year, intertwining its rich history with the main local traditions which define the town, namely the agricultural links of Calasparra, rice growing and livestock.

As in all Spanish towns, religion is the core around which the fiestas are wrapped, and the town also celebrates a Feria in the Autumn.

Semana Santa, Calasparra

Semana Santa or Easter Week is an important celebration in Calasparra, the biggest event in the religious calendar. There have been religious processions in the town since the 15th century and today five "cofrdadias" (or brotherhoods) take during the week.

Fiestas Patronales of San Abdón and San Senén

These take place at the end of July and honour the two patrons of the town, Saint Abdón and Saint Senén. The fiestas are held alongside the bull-related events of the Fería Taurina del Arroz, honouring the traditions of rice-growing and bullfighting which are so important in Calasparra.

As well as these activities there are a number of community events to enjoy, as well as the religious procession and services.

Feria and September Fiestas

These take place between the end of August and 9th September, with 6 days of bull-running and other bull-related events, as well as a programme of other activities and entertainment, and are best-known for the "encierros", the 1-kilometre bull runs. These are held every morning for the duration of the feria and attract thousands of spectators.

Romería of the Virgen de la Esperanza

This takes place on the evening of 7th September, with the day of the patrona on the 8th.
It is a popular Romería which attracts thousands of participants, usually accompanied by a musical concert and a night of picnics by the riverside at the sanctuary of La Esperanza.
