Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, Sucina
The church of “Nuestra Señora del Rosario” in Sucina
Occupying the major centre point of the town of Sucina is the “Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario”, Our Lady of the Rosary, which dates back to the 18th century.
At this time one of the children of the borough’s founder, Don Fernando Baltasar, decided to convert the chapel belonging to his private estate into a parish church, so that it could be used by the local population who found themselves a long distance away from the parish churches in San Javier and Torre Pacheco.
He completed this process in 1744 and the official completion of the works was recorded by Episcopal notary Don Antonio de Rojas.
Two plaques on the front of the church commemorate its foundation in 1744 and the 250th anniversary in 1994.
By the creation of the parish Don Fernando reserved for himself and his successors the patronage of the church and the right to occupy the Capilla Mayor, the major chapel, as well as burial rights.
In his will he bequeathed to the church the façade, decorative cloths and candlesticks in the chapel as well as two paintings, one of them depicting the “Purísima Concepción”, which he wanted to be hung at the sides of the main altar.
Today the church is still the focal point for local fiestas and community celebrations.
Mass is celebrated as follows (summer 2013): Wednesday to Saturday at 20.00, Sunday at 11.00.
During the winter Tuesday to Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 12 midday
