Mazarrón Council sign wildlife conservation agreement
Council sign agreement with nature association ANSE for the conservation of the environment in the municipality
On Friday October 3, the Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, together with the Councillor for the Environment and Natural Environment, Gaspar Miras, and representatives of the Association of Naturalists of the Southeast (ANSE), signed a collaboration agreement aimed at the conservation and improvement of the natural environment of the municipality. This agreement, which will be valid throughout 2024, will focus on the protection of key areas such as the Lagunas de las Moreras wetland and other areas of ecological value.
The agreement covers environmental education and volunteer activities, aimed at both schools and the general public, with the aim of raising public awareness of the natural wealth of Mazarrón. 30 educational activities are planned involving local primary and secdondary schools, including an educational campaign highlighting the natural riches of the municipality and the development of programs such as the Life Cerceta project, aimed at the protection of endangered species.
In addition, at least 15 environmental volunteer activities will be carried out, open to the public and focused especially on families. These will include cleaning beaches and gullies, removing invasive exotic flora, planting native species and monitoring fauna and flora. The activities will take place regularly, coinciding with important dates in the environmental calendar, such as International Bird Day and Volunteer Day.
Some the notable activities in the agreement are:
* Guided tours to Laguna de las Moreras for bird watching
* Nest box construction workshops.
* Talks and travelling exhibitions on marine biodiversity and protected species.
* Scientific bird ringing days and Mora tortoise census in the Sierra de las Moreras.
Mayor Ginés Campillo expressed his satisfaction with this agreement, stressing that "collaboration with ANSE reinforces the commitment of Mazarrón Town Council to the conservation of our natural resources, while involving citizens in the protection of the environment, a fundamental aspect for the future of our municipality." For his part, the Councillor for the Environment, Gaspar Miras, stressed that "this agreement is an opportunity to promote environmental education from the grassroots, bringing the youngest people closer to the natural treasures we have in Mazarrón."
In signing the agreement Mazarrón Town Council reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development and the protection of the natural environment, highlighting the ecological wealth of the municipality and encouraging the active participation of citizens in its conservation.
