The magnitude 2.5 quake happened at about 5am this Wednesday morning
The municipality of Jumilla in northern Murcia, not far from the Alicante towns of Sax and Elda, was the site of an earthquake this Wednesday, April 24, that measured 2.5 on the Richter scale.According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), which catalogues earthquakes and seaquakes in Spain, the tremor was felt to the west of the town of Jumilla, towards the Albacete side.It occurred at around 5am and the epicentre of the earthquake was at a depth of 4 kilometres.Magnitude 2.5 is not strong for an earthquake, and the emergency services in Murcia did not receive any calls from residents reporting any damage. To put it in context, the strongest of the terribly destructive series of earthquakes that shook Taiwan recently measured 6.1 on the Richter scale.Minor earthquakes are not unusual in this part of southern Spain, and most of the time they are too weak to be felt or to cause major damage.Image: IGN
