Murcia city Christmas lights and market 2024: These are the dates for the Xmas switch on
The lights in Murcia city are already being installed and the feeling of Christmas has arrived
Murcia city is already getting into the Christmas spirit as the festive lights are already beginning to be installed in some of the main streets of the city. So when will they be plugged in and lit up for the festive season?
Well, according to municipal sources, the big Christmas light switch-on for 2024 will be on Saturday November 23 at 8pm in the Plaza Santo Domingo.
The early switch-on will follow the tradition of last year by coming before December to encourage the people of Murcia to get into the Christmas spirit.
The idea is to encourage local commerce in the city and help businesses to flourish during the festive period.
In addition, the assembly of the Great Christmas Tree in the Plaza Circular will begin in the coming weeks, although the people of Murcia will have to wait a little longer for it to be finished. The lights will go on for the giant Murcia Christmas Tree on Friday December 6.
It is hoped that, as happened last year when Murcia tennis player Carlos Alcaraz came down for the official switch-on, the person in charge of turning on the lights this year will be a well-known celebrity.
As for the big tree, it is worth remembering that in 2023 the City Council put the contract on offer for the installation of this large structure for two years, with a base budget of 847,000 euros (700,000 euros excluding taxes, 350,000 euros for each year), with the possibility of an extension for another two years, so the total contract reaches 1.4 million euros.
The company that was awarded the work was Audiovisuales Rent APC Audio. This company is not only responsible for the tree but also for the technical and human coverage required to develop the multiple activities that will take place in December and in the first days of January.
The dates of two other Christmas events in Murcia have also been announced – the Christmas Market at La Glorieta, on December 29, and the Garden of Dreams at the Malecón, on December 15. There will doubtless be other Christmas market dates announced as we get closer to the time.
Another unmissable Christmas event to be held this month will be the start of the iconic Cortylandia show for children, which returns to Murcia after 13 years. This Christmas classic will once again illuminate the façade of the emblematic Corte Inglés shopping centre on Avenida de la Libertad with the following show times:
- Monday to Sunday: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm
- December 24 and 31: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 5pm, 6pm and 7pm
- December 25 and January 1: 5pm, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm
- January 5: 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm
