Night market returns to Cabo Roig this summer
The new Aguamarina street market will open 29 stalls between June and September
The Orihuela City Council has published a call for the management of the Aguamarina night market situated on the back of Cabo Roig’s famous strip. Currently, a morning street market draws thousands of locals and tourists every Thursday to Paseo Aguamarina and Calle Cielo.
Once a new management company is employed, the night market will run between June 15 and September 30, from 7pm until midnight. The 190-square-metre stretch of road will accommodate 29 stalls, selling everything from local artisan products and crafts to clothes and jewellery.
Residents have long been complaining about the state of the streets and the adjoining cliff walk following the Thursday morning market, so a key responsibility of the new management team will be to ensure all rubbish is collected following the evening events.
The 10,700 euro contract, which the management company will have to pay the Orihuela City Council, will also require the successful bidder to select, organise and erect the stalls, collect fees and install a portaloo for the stall holders.
The initial contract will have a duration of two years, with the possibility of being extended for another two.
The almost 11,000-euro figure was calculated based on the 39,150 euros of income the 29 stalls should bring in between June and September, while the overall outgoings have been estimated at 21,317 euros.
These expenses consist of the obligations to hire an administrative assistant for 30 hours a week and a part-time controller for 10 hour per week as well as a worker to carry out the daily street cleaning after the end of the market.
The night market has been trialled twice before, but the lack of organisation and control has led to it being “a nuisance” for passersby and the dozens of bars and restaurants in Cabo Roig, according to Councillor for Markets, Noelia Grao.
It’s hoped that the market will be much more successful this time round considering all of the contract requirements.
