San Pedro del Pinatar emerges as a booming tourist hotspot

San Pedro del Pinatar continues to solidify itself as a thriving travel destination and one of the true jewels in the Mar Menor’s crown, and recent tourism figures show that the town’s popularity is only growing.

Following a record-breaking October 2023, when more than half of San Pedro’s accommodation was fully booked, the popular spring holiday season of Holy Week 2024 proved equally impressive. With a staggering 60.54% overall occupancy rate from Monday through Sunday, the bustling week surpassed the 2023 results by 8.78%.

This was despite the fact that a dreadful weather forecast led to cancellations in hotels and apartments up and down the coast.

"Despite the bad weather, we have had spectacular data," said Councillor for Tourism, Javier Castejón.

According to Mr Castejón, March ended up boasting a very impressive occupancy rate of 50.82% – significantly exceeding the 2023 level by more than 6%. Since the start of the year, a steady uptick has been observed, and even more plans are underway to improve tourist facilities and attractions, including upgrading coastal amenities, organising year-round events and marketing the area's unique Salt Flats to draw more visitors.

San Pedro has started marketing heavily in areas that have a connection from Alicante and Corvera airports, or by train from the Region of Murcia. As a result, domestic tourists flock predominantly from Madrid, Valladolid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia and Albacete while internationally, Belgium, the UK and Norway lead the pack.

Interestingly enough, music has emerged as the star attraction fuelling San Pedro del Pinatar's tourist appeal. The Sal de Música festival drew more than 24,000 attendees during seven concert days, generating an estimated 3 million euros. Of this, 1 million came directly from the festival itself, while the other 2 million euros was made by local bars, hotels, restaurants and other businesses.

San Pedro del Pinatar Tourist Office The municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar has one principal tourist information office which is open throughout the year, and then other tourist information points which open during the peak summer months. Due to its location on the fringes of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean coastline, San Pedro del Pinatar has a period of intense summer tourism activity during the peak summer months, although is popular with retirees of all nationalities out of peak season.

Much of the tourism activity is directed into these peak months, although the Salinas natural park and health tourism hotels in San Pedro del Pinatar make this a popular destination throughout the year.
