The Ricote valley, a natural paradise in the heart of the Region of Murcia
Water sports and picturesque scenery on the banks of the River Segura in central Murcia
Lush greenery, a wide, slow-moving river punctuated by rapids and weirs, a secluded valley hidden from the world by steep mountains… this may sound uncharacteristic of the Costa Cálida but it can all be found in the Ricote valley, a natural paradise just 35 kilometres or so from the city of Murcia.
This idyllic area in the heart of the Region is full of history, having been known at one point as the “Morisco Valley” when it was one of the last refuges of the Moors who remained in the Iberian Peninsula. They maintained their agricultural traditions in this secluded valley, which is now part of the municipalities of Abarán, Blanca, Ojós, Ricote, Villanueva del Río Segura, Ulea and Archena.
Visitors are unfailingly delighted by the natural beauty, the picturesque towns and villages and the delicious gastronomy, and this is also a perfect destination for those looking for action and adventure. For outdoor activities and reconnection with nature, look no further, just come and enjoy the nature walks, cycling routes, rafting, climbing, kayaking, paintball and ziplining!
In such a beauty spot there are of course numerous viewing points, which make for a tour of the valley in themselves. Following the “Ruta de los Miradores” visitors can branch off onto a myriad of fascinating paths and tracks, seeing the sights from all angles as they explore places such as Abarán, Blanca, Ricote and Villanueva.
Another interesting route along the course of the River Segura is the Ruta de las Norias (Route of the Water Wheels), which allows you to admire one of the most outstanding features of the ancient irrigation systems used to make the most of the fertile land here. So deep-rooted are the traditions in this part of Murcia that in fact Abarán has more water wheels still in use than any other municipality in the whole of Spain, as well as the largest working water wheel in Europe!
And if you’re visiting with the children, there’s no need to worry about them getting bored: one of the biggest attractions in the area is Murapark, an outdoor adventure centre for all the family, complete with ziplining, a sky walk, rock climbing, archery, pedal karting, mini golf, boat trips and even archaeological digs!
Whether you’re on your own, with your partner or with family and friends, an unforgettable time is guaranteed in this rare oasis of green in the Region of Murcia, surrounded by plentiful flora and fauna, and one experience which appeals to all is the descent of the River Segura: fun and laughter both on the tranquil stretches of the river and in the rapids, where rafters are bound to get wet as they career downstream!
But the water is far more soothing at one of the best-known spots in the valley, the thermal spa resort or “Balneario” of Archena. This historic establishment, which dates back to Roman times, is acclaimed as one of the finest in Spain, on account of both the therapeutic qualities of the water and the superb facilities at the three hotels in the resort. The Balneario is open all year round, so you can ease away those aches and pains any time you want!
