Three new speed cameras coming to Alicante roads, including A-31 and Dénia
Average-speed checks will expand across the province, with an additional fixed camera planned near Xàbia
The DGT is preparing to activate three new speed cameras in Alicante province, bringing the number of operational average-speed control points to five by the end of this month, with another planned for Dénia at a later date. The measures are intended to reduce speeds on roads with heavy traffic and a high accident rate. Drivers will be warned by advance signs, and the first month of operation will be used for informative notices only. Fines for speeding will begin after that initial period.
The first new average-speed system is being installed on the A-31 between Alicante and Monforte del Cid, in the direction of Madrid. The cameras will be positioned near the Las Atalayas industrial estate at kilometre 232.5, and near the junction with the AP-7 and the Aspe-La Alcoraya exit at kilometre 226.
The roadworks have been completed, with only the number-plate detection equipment still to be fitted. The system is expected to begin operating at the end of October, covering a section of around 6.5 kilometres.
A second average-speed control point is planned on the CV-725, the main access route to Dénia from the AP-7. It will monitor vehicles travelling towards the town between kilometre 1.3 and kilometre 4.15, a stretch of almost three kilometres. Its installation has been delayed, and no launch date has yet been confirmed.
The third new camera will be a conventional fixed device on the CV-740 between Xàbia and El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, at kilometre 7.8. It is expected to be introduced in the coming months.
Average-speed cameras were first introduced in Alicante province in February 2026. Two are already operating on the A-31, one in the direction of Alicante between Novelda and Monforte del Cid, and another towards Madrid between Novelda and Elda-Petrer. A third is in place on the A-7 between the Elche Sur and Crevillent exits, in the direction of Alicante.
The longest monitored section is the route between Novelda and Elda-Petrer, measuring more than 8.5 kilometres. The other existing A-31 section covers 2.35 kilometres, while the A-7 stretch is 4.16 kilometres.
These systems use cameras to record each vehicle’s number plate when it enters and leaves the controlled section. A computer calculates the average speed from the journey time. The Alicante Traffic Department says this confirms whether a vehicle has exceeded the limit continuously along the route, rather than simply at one point.
