UK-born expat to represent Murcia at Miss RNB España competition
The 20-year-old beauty contestant will be vying for the title at the final gala in Barcelona this April
A Murcia resident, English-born Madison Ounsley, has been selected from among hundreds of candidates to represent the Region of Murcia in one of the most important national beauty competitions in Spain – Miss RNB España.
Madison, who is 20 years old, was born to British parents in Devon but they moved to the Region of Murcia in 2008, when she was just 5. Since then, she has lived in Alcantarilla, where she works as a secretary doing admin work in her parents’ English academy, Rapid English.
Madison’s modelling career started when she saw a casting competition at the Nueva Condomina shopping centre when she was just 12 years old, and she knew straight away that she wanted to sign up. She had always liked modelling and had been doing it at home ever since she was little, and now she saw her chance for her big break.
She was called to the modelling agency, Monroe Models, and spent nearly five years with them, doing photoshoots for Italian clothes brands, wedding dresses and lots more fashion brands. That’s when she started thinking she could move from modelling to beauty pageants.
“I knew I wanted to move ahead in that world,” says Madison, who credits a large part of her success to her parents.
“They have always helped me to follow my dream in the modelling world, even though they knows it can’t be my future job, just because I’ve always liked doing it,” she says.
Now, Madison will be competing for the title of Miss RNB España this year at the final gala, which is to be held in Barcelona on Saturday April 13.
The Miss RNB España competition is among the most prestigious beauty contests in Spain. There is also an overarching contest, the Miss RNB Supranational gala, which the winner of Miss RNB España will enter to represent Spain on a global level.
Of the 52 contestants vying for the title of Miss RNB España – each representing one of Spain’s 50 provinces and the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla – only 24 will go through to the final round.
The candidates who go through to the next round will be decided by a series of stages, including those decided on by a panel of judges at the pre-gala in Barcelona on Friday April 12 and which one gets the most likes on the competition’s official Instagram post.
Madison’s mother and biggest cheerleader, Amanda, says, “It’s something the Region of Murcia can benefit from because she has to make a video to promote the Region, its history, what is so great about living here…”
Madison’s chosen video, featuring a local Murcia animal charity, showcases the best of the Region of Murcia while highlighting a cause she cares about, animal rights.
The fact that a foreign-born resident has managed to get so far already is itself testament to the growing integration between the Spanish and international communities.
“You can see that Spain and especially the Region of Murcia are becoming more and more accepting and welcoming towards other nationalities and cultures,” says Amanda.
So what does it mean to Madison to be representing Murcia?
“I’m just honoured, being an English person, coming over from England, and being able to represent the place where I’ve lived all my life,” she says. “I'm not only proud of my English roots but I’m also extremely proud to represent the place where I’ve grown up and lived nearly all of my life.”
